by John DuAne GayWaves Radio

This month, we give a warm welcome to Cleveland's newest lesbian, gay and bisexual radio show: Hold That Door, hosted by John Horner. Hold That Door can be heard live on--now hold onto your hats-WUJC 88.7 FM, the voice of John Carroll University, every Thursday from 2:00 to 4:30p.m. Hold That Door features a mix of hot dance sounds and what John calls gay folk music as well as news and features of interest to our community. John also invites his listeners to phone in song dedications for their loved ones.

With the radio premiere of Hold That Door, John Carroll has become the first Catholic college in the country to broadcast a lesbian, gay and bisexual radio show. Now with GayWaves on WRUW 91.1 FM, and the nationally syndicated program This Way Out on WCSB 89.3 on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m., and on WOBC 91.5 FM from 7:30 to 8:00 pm, gayer Cleveland may now be unique in having four lesbian, gay and bisexual radio shows on the air.

John, in his fifth year at John Carroll, has been out of the closet since he was 13 years old and has been out on campus since his freshman year. Although most of the other lesbians and gays on campus are still in the closet, John reports that he has never had a negative response to his being open about being gay. The school administration has even been supportive to the point of including sexual orientation in its anti-discrimination policy. John had previously been asked to develop an awareness program for the school when he was a member of the student council but later decided that he could be more effective by putting the radio show together.

So far, response to Hold That Door, on the air for the last five weeks, has been positive. John will be leaving the area after this year, unfortunately. However he is training a lesbian to take over the show. His apprentice came out of the closet on the air in celebration of National Coming Out Day this year. Give Hold That Door a listen this Thursday at 2:00 and call John at 379-4438, WUJC's request line, to offer your comment and perhaps dedicate a song to that special person in your life.

TV Guide recently reported that homophobic would-be TV censor Rev. Donald Wildmon lost in federal court in his efforts to keep the British documentary Damned in the U.S.A. off of American TV screens. Mississippi-based district court judge Glenn Davidson ruled that Wildmon, who appears in Damned in the U.S.A., has no control over the U.S. distribution of the prize-winning film about America's cen-

sorship wars. The filmmakers are reportedly negotiating presentation of the film with PBS and Showtime.

TV Guide reported a flood of mail was received over its September 26 report on Wildmon. Leading off the letters column was a letter from Peter Chrisanthopoulos, president of the Network Television Association, who cited several national research studies which concluded that an overwhelming number of Americans support free programing including those programs that deal with so-called sensitive or controversial topics.

The October 10 edition of TV Guide reports that CBS' new sitcom Hearts Afire will have the leading character's ex-wife, who left him when she came out as a lesbian, drop in on the family to visit her children from time to time. Hearts Afire can be seen on Channel 8 here at 8:30 p.m. on Mondays.

Jim Mullen's Hot Sheet column in Entertainment Weekly says of the recently outed John Schlafly, son of antifeminist and antigay activist Phyllis Schlafly: "There's nothing to be ashamed of. Even the best of families have some conservative Republicans in them." Previously, Mullen asked antigay talk show host Rush Limbaugh to "stop wrapping yourself in the flag, you're getting it dirty.”

Still no word on when the Kids In the Hall show, which features the talents of openly gay actor Scott Thompson, is scheduled to air locally on WJW Channel 8, the local CBS outlet. The station reports that they will run the CBS show on Fridays from 12:30 to 1:30 am.

I also could not get a confirmation from WKYC Channel 3 on a report in Columbus' Gaybeat newspaper that they would be airing a national gay "get-out-the-vote" commercial as a public service announcement. The 30 second non-partisan ad which features lesbian and gay young people stressing the importance of our community's vote, was produced by the Coming Out Voting Coalition with assistance from the Human Rights Campaign Fund. The ad is also scheduled to be aired on the Cable News Network and cable's WGN network.

Don't forget that we at GayWaves appreciate your opinion of how we are portrayed in the media. We also would like to know when you may be on a local TV or radio show. Call us at WRUW at 368-2208 on Monday between 9:00 and 11:00 p.m., or call the station any time and leave a message. Information is needed by Monday evening for the Wednesday broadcast. ▼
